Jazz Singer Latrese Bush joins us today to speak about her upcoming music festival. The 3rd Annual Lowcountry Fish & Grits Music Festival brings awareness to the rich Gullah Geechee culture and its connection to the African diaspora by showcasing great musical talent and local cuisine. Latrese Bush, founder of the festival, joins us to speak about this year’s event.
Bush shares that her ancestors are part of the Gullah Geechee community in Bluffton, South Carolina. She speaks about growing up with red rice similar to jollof rice from the West Coast of Africa. She also speaks about low country boils, which was ‘soul food’ in her community. Families gathered with fresh catch from local waterways and enjoyed fellowshipping.
She reflects on the food and music being hold-overs from the lives of the enslaved brought from the “Gold Coast” or Ghana. Bush speaks about the African beat that is found in our music today.
The festival takes place Saturday, October 4th, from 12PM - 6PM on Hilton Head Island. For more information, go to FGMFEST.com
