The annual Jazz on the Green event to support the historic New Hope AME church, purported to be the oldest church in the Buckhead community, will take place on October 11th. Funds collected through this wonderful event go to support the historic preservation of the church and graveyards. Recently graves of the enslaved were excavated behind the church, and there is also a historic cemetery across the street. Tony Hightower, a musician, actor, singer, and writer, joins us to speak about this year’s event. Tony Hightower, welcome to The Local Take.
Hightower shares that he had finished a few projects when the opportunity with Jazz on the Green came up and he was enthusiastic about the opportunity. He also speaks about the church community and the artists who will join him on “the green.”
This year, one of the featured acts is the Spelman Noire Ensemble. The event vendors often offer one-of-a-kind items. The world-famous BBQ, along with homemade lemonade and fried fish, is offered. Guests should bring chairs or blankets to join the fun.
