The Black Orchestral Network is hosting its summit in Atlanta on October 19th. David Norville is coordinating this event to support Black Orchestral musicians by cultivating the community, lifting their voices, and sharing their stories.
David Norville explains that the Black Orchestral Network began with conversations in 2020. In 2022, the organization became official. They have over 200 members and the support of eight established institutions, including the Mellon Foundation.
Black musicians comprise approximately 3% of orchestral players. Lack of access and representation are interconnected. Norville reminds us that Blacks have been involved with orchestral music since Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a renowned 18th-century French composer, violinist, and master fencer of African descent.
