The May 19th Primary Election has a voter registration deadline on April 20th, and early voting for the election starts on April 27th. Charis Johnson with the League of Women Voters joins us to shed some light on what’s happening.
I knew that the May 19th Primary includes the election for Democratic and Republican candidates for Governor, and the election of judges to serve on the Georgia State Supreme Court.
I asked Johnson if she could share with us the other offices on the ballot in May. She mentions the offices of the Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, and Commissioners of Agriculture, Insurance, and Labor. All of the State Senate and Representatives are up for a vote. In other words, all of the people who will directly impact your life and livelihood.
Georgia Voters can find their sample ballot here
There are also ballot measures, a proposed change to the State Constitution, and local tax or policy issues, including SPLOST, on the ballot
I share my voting plan to early vote on the first Saturday (May 2) of early voting, and I encourage friends and family to vote early. In our community, folks vote after church, and in many counties, the first Sunday (May 3rd), the polls are open. This is especially important in the counties we know that are being targeted by federal and state powers.
Johnson encourages everyone to make a plan and to bring along friends and family with them. You can keep up with their work via email, social media, their website or telephone 404-491-9390.
