Georgia, known as the voter suppression state, is also now considered a contested state. We’re all being bombarded with ads, posts, social media videos, and media streams. It’s hard not to know about the highly contested midterms. Believe it or not, some folks are still completely disconnected, bogged down with life, and not paying attention to current events at all.

I reached out to Helen Butler, executive director for The People’s Agenda.

I asked her about voters who aren’t tuned in, and she said low-propensity voters are usually hit harder. The midterms include elections for every state office, including Attorney General, Secretary of State, and two Public Service Commissioners. She mentions how important it is to elect people in these positions, as their actions will impact our state more than other elected officials.

Butler encourages voters to choose candidates who will fight on their behalf. She speaks to Medicare expansion, livable wages, and even good jobs. She also speaks about holding elected officials accountable. She recommends engaging with your elected officials on a regular basis. She speaks about touching base quarterly, monthly, or weekly. You decide because your vote is your power. Civic engagement is necessary. Butler advises voters to access Vote411.org or Ballotpedia.org to keep up with issues and where politicians stand.

Butler shares that there will be Election Protection Monitors that voters can call if they experience any challenges while voting: 1-866-OUR-VOTE.

I asked her about the People’s Agenda. Butler explained that the organization was created by Joseph Lowery, and she was introduced to the coalition by her brother Walter Butler, Jr., who was working with the NAACP.
