Karen Gist + Lee Daniels team up for FOX drama 'Our Kind of People'

Karen Gist

Former STAR showrunner Karin Gist is teaming up with Lee Daniels again for a new FOX drama based on Lawrence Otis Graham‘s book Our Kind of People.

In 2017, FOX began working with Empire produce Wendy Calhoun on a scripted series about “a multi-generational family dynasty from Chicago whose dark secrets threaten to rip it apart.”

Now Gist and Daniels are redeveloping the project with a new storyline:

"Single mom Angela Vaughn risks it all and moves her family to Martha’s Vineyard with hopes of taking her natural hair care line to the next level by infiltrating the African American elite in Oak Bluffs.  But she soon discovers a secret about her past that just might change her position and shake up her life and this influential community forever."

Gist is serving as the writer and executive producer along with Daniels.

Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class focuses on the Black bourgeoisie and their obsession with race, class and culture. Graham interviewed several high-profile families from Washington D.C., New York, New Orleans and Atlanta as well as members of prominent organizations like The Links, Jack and Jill of America + Black Greek-lettered organizations like the Alphas, AKA’s and Delta’s. He also discusses the infamous Brown Paper Bagand Straight Hair Rulertests.

Ray Cornelius is one of Atlanta’s newest entertainment writers and media personalities. His arts and entertainment website, www.raycornelius.com spotlights the latest in “positive” African-American celebrity news and was established in 2012. Since that time Cornelius has covered a myriad of red carpet premieres, award shows and Atlanta-based films including Tyler Perry’s Temptation, The BronzeLens Film Festival, The Trumpet Awards, and The Steve Harvey’s Neighborhood Awards just to name a few. He has also interviewed a who’s who list of today’s top singers, actors and reality stars. With nearly 20 years of media experience, Cornelius has also worked as an associate producer for the Emmy-winning public affairs program, ATL Insider and with such award shows as The Soul Train Awards, The Trumpet Awards and BET Hip-Hop Awards.
