This week on The Local Take I spoke with Ian Fennell about Good Sam Atlanta, a non-profit community health center that serves underserved populations in our community. Good Sam is kicking off 2018 with FREE Health Screenings for women in support of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
Fenell, who is Health Service Programs Manager for the Good Samaritan Health Center, explains that cervical cancer is preventable with annual screenings including pap smears and HPV (Human Papillomavirus) screenings. He also mentions the vaccine for HPV available for teens and young adults.
Ian Fennell continually stressed the importance of early detection. While Cervical Cancer is preventable outcomes in the African-American community are dire sometimes due to lack of access to care. The later the disease is diagnosed the lower the opportunity for a good prognosis and recovery.
Good Sam is here in the community to provide access to folks who might otherwise not have this option. If you are a resident of Fulton or DeKalb county Good Sam can provide you with a free pap smear if you are 20 years and older or a free mammogram if you are over 40 years old.
