The Local Take With Kiplyn Primus: Weeping Time Part 2 * Update

Saturday, March 10 at 8:00 a.m. on Jazz 91.9 WCLK, The Local Take concludes a special two part re-broadcast with an update about The Weeping Time.  Dr. Kwesi DeGraft-Hanson about his ongoing efforts to commemorate the anniversary of the largest recorded single day sale of enslaved humans in the history of the United States.  It happened in Savannah on March 2 - 3, 1859.

A small commemoration took place in Atlanta in 2017.  Last week in Savannah, a large commemoration was organized which included former mayors of Savannah including Dr. Otis Johnson, Edna Jackson, and Eddie DeLoach. The program took place at the site of the old race course where the actual sale took place.  An elementary school now stands on that property.

Dr. Kwesi worked with the administrators of the school to create a curriculum so that the children could learn about the history of the site. Those who participated in the commemoration held symbolic black umbrellas donated by various retailers. In 2019, Dr. Kwesi is working to bring back the progeny of those who were sold to their "home" to honor their mothers and fathers who "covered" us.
