The Local Take: West End Gem--Hammonds House Museum

This week on WCLK's The Local Take I speak with the Hammonds HouseDirector Leatrice Ellzy about our "gem" of an art museum in West End.

I ask Ellzy to share the history of the Hammonds House museum for those who may not know how it came into being. She speaks about Dr. O. T. Hammonds, who purchased the pre-civil war home on Peeples street and renovated it to support the home's Victorian origins.  Dr. Hammonds possessed hundreds of artworks from the most prominent African-American artists of the period. Thankfully with some governmental support the museum was created after his death.

Leatrice Ellzy shares that in September, they will launch the inaugural Hammonds House Honors a program to award artists across multiple disciplines in our city. This is the first of its kind event that will include performances, and honor the art creators, curators and even collectors in our community.

We also speak about the current exhibition by Atlanta artist Shenequa Gay, Lit Without Sherman: A Love Letter to the West End.  In our extended interview, I ask how that exhibition came about and ask what she requested when she reached out to Gay. She also mentions that there will be several "community" days scheduled so that residents of the West End can come to share their stories.
