The Local Take: Pandemic In Assisted Living? Mack Willis From Summerset Assisted Living Centers

TIME Magazine

This week on WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am) I reached out to Mack Willis from Summerset Assisted Living Center to ask him about life on Coronavirus lockdown for seniors in his his care.  He explains that Summerset began shutting down on March 2nd placing strict visitation rules in place. A few days later they went on a complete lockdown.

He explained that they check the temperature of everyone before they gain access to the facility. This includes healthcare providers and deliverymen and their employees. He also spoke about convincing their residents to practice self-distancing in the public areas and for activities such as their morning devotion.  They have also limited gathering and even their dining hall has one person to a table.

He spoke about a few family members coming to the center to walk around the gardens and speak with their seniors via the window.

I asked him what advice who could give to family members who miss engaging with their seniors who are in assisted living or nursing centers.  He mentioned that families shouldn't second guess their decision to place the seniors at a facility.  Even in difficult times such as these, they made the best decision for their family.
