Jazz 91.9 WCLK is working with PBS to promote their documentary The Black Church-This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song, airing on WPBA or GPB at 9pm on February 16th and 17th. Last week we spoke with Dr. Juel P. Benson-Borders about Atlanta's historic Wheat Street Baptist Church, and on Saturday's show we're speaking Apostle Darryl Winston from Greaterworks Assembly in Atlanta.
I ask Apostle Winston how he came to the ministry and if he readily answered the call. He explains that it took about three years to "surrender" to the call to join the church. He shared that The Black Church was a spiritual, cultural, social, and political "womb of our community." The Black Church is liberating for our community.
He spoke about his work at Union Temple in Anacostia, DC. and how he came to Greaterworks Assembly to impart a prophetic ministry. I ask about the community engagement at his church and if that was part of their mandate. He says that his church is faithful to The Black Church's origins. I ask about the most segregated hour in the country being Sunday at 10AM, he speaks about the future and continuing relevancy of The Black Church.
