Kamasi Washington: Heaven And Earth

Inglewood California's Kamasi Washington is one of the shining lights of Jazz music today as a bandleader, composer and saxophonist. We've played his music on  Jazz 91.9 WCLK from the beginning, and we've checked out his mesmerizing live appearances when he comes through Atlanta.

He is out with his second major release on Young Turks Recordings, a double cd/sided release called Heaven and Earth. This record further establishes his bona fides as heir to a Jazz Tradition that encompasses such diverse icons as Eric Dolphy, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Pharoah Sanders and Herbie Hancock. Like his 2015 release Epic, Heaven and Earth features everything from orchestral works to straight ahead, melody to hard bop, with even the eclectic cover thrown in.  Check out his band's cover of the title cut to Bruce Lee's film Fists of Fury, recut in 2018 as a call to resistance from those suffering from injustice.

You can hear cuts from Heaven and Earth at various times on WCLK, including on Serenade to the City, Monday through Friday from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. You can also expect to hear music from this record on WCLK on the Sunday Jazz Suite with Debb Moore, Sundays from  11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Jazz Tones with Jay Edwards,  Sundays from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
