The Local Take: June 5 Dekalb County COVID-19 Vaccine, Food Distribution Event

This week WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am) welcomes back DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, who continues the county food distribution events on Saturday, June 5th, and this time you can all receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the New York Times COVID-19 tracker, the virus is a "high risk" in DeKalb County and metro Atlanta as a whole

CEO Michael Thurmond shares that fewer than 25% of DeKalb County residents are fully vaccinated. If you're in a room with ten people, 7 of them are not vaccinated. The only people still dying from COVID-19 are those that are not vaccinated. He shares that 960 DeKalb County residents have died from COVID-19. While he remains hopeful, the reality is that more people need to be vaccinated.

Food insecurity is also at epidemic proportions in DeKalb County, with one in four children experiencing food insecurity. Food boxes with Georgia-grown fruits and vegetables will also be distributed. Each package will also include 10 lbs. of chicken and a dozen eggs.

Thurmond hopes that as people wait in line to receive their food boxes, they will take the time to get the vaccine.

Distribution Locations are as follows:

James R. Hallford Stadium, 3789 Memorial College Ave., Clarkston, GA 30021

Former K-Mart store parking lot at 5597 Buford Hwy NE, Doraville, GA 30340

Buck Godfrey Stadium, 2817 Clifton Springs Rd., Decatur, GA 30034

New Birth Baptist Church - 6400 Woodrow Road, Stonecrest, GA 30038
