This week on WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am), we discuss World AIDS Day on December 1st. I reached out to Imara Canady from the AIDS Healthcare Foundationto speak about this annual event. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is hosting virtual events around the globe on Tuesday.
Before we speak about World AIDS Day events, I ask Canady if our ongoing HIV/AIDS pandemic, had experienced a downturn due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Unfortunately, the rates of HIV/AIDS infection have not decreased. In fact, Canady shares that they have continued to increase. He explained that some people discovered they were positive, and some are new diagnoses.
I ask Canaday to share with us about World AIDS Day, which is observed on December 1st. I ask him how the day came about and what people do to commemorate the day. He speaks to the day coming about to remember those that have passed from this disease. He mentions the AIDS Quilt.
This year the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in partnership with the Horizon Theatre in Atlanta, is producing the play Love M. It will be available virtually on December 1st at 7 PM. He explains that the play is great for the family. He speaks about Lamman Rucker and Terry Burrell two actors that are featured. He also speaks to a discussion following the play that features Patrick Riley and Daniel Black.
I ask Canady to compare the impact of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 in our community. He speaks about the importance of knowing your status with both diseases, and that the larger community is having 'virus' conversations that were previously the domain of the HIV/AIDS community.
