Antoine Gibson was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and now advocates for others who are living with the disease. This jazz saxophonist is hosting a Mutali Diabetes Smooth Jazz Benefit Concert and Health Fair. Gibson is inviting the community to bring their lawn chairs and coolers to enjoy an afternoon of music, food trucks, vendors, and health screenings. The concert will feature musicians from local high schools and trumpeter Melvin Miller. For more information on the Mutali Diabetes event.
I asked Gibson how he came to combine a jazz concert with a health fair. He explains that this is an inaugural event, and his passion for jazz is matched by his advocacy around Type 1 Diabetes. He volunteers, playing music at Camp Kudzu where children with Type 1 diabetes can escape the limitations of their disease for a while. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Camp Kudzu.
Gibson shares that the smooth jazz concert is the bait to get folks in for health screenings and learn how to care for chronic diseases while pursuing their dreams.
