The Fulton County Department of Arts and Culture will host “EmpowerHer-A Celebration of Women in Art. This group exhibition features the art of more than 200 local Atlanta contemporary women artists. This fantastic work is open to the public at the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum and Conference Center through April 25th. Go to www.fultonarts.org for more information. Dr. David Manuel and Tisha Smith join us to discuss the exhibition and their work.
Tisha Smith, curator of EmpowerHer, began in 2024 when a scheduled exhibition fell through, leaving her scrambling. She put out the call to local women artists, and the work that began as a gallery exhibition for the visual arts has expanded beyond the gallery walls. This year the exhibition includes 2D and 3D work. Additionally, music, literature, and more are being celebrated.
Often, women in the arts are unheralded. There is no official platform that celebrates them and their work. The exhibition showcases both master and amateur artists. Smith shares that they would ultimately like to take the EmpowerHer exhibition on the road.
Manuel speaks about the need to support public art. Recently, a few art centers have moved from Fulton County to city management. They also speak about the future of art, working with students, and our “Futures Lab” bringing art and technology together.
