British drummer Yussef Dayes came to the WCLK studios last year and hung out with me before his sold out show at Variety Playhouse. Show had the entire audience in a trance. Probably my favorite young drummer of these times. He's like a mix of Carlton Barrett, Harvey Mason and Elvin Jones. We hit it off immediately as soon as he walked into the studio and he said "we're definitely brothers because I have a brother named Jamal and a brother named Ahmad" (along with another brother named Kareem). When he told me that, I had to agree that we were definitely brothers lol. After the interview, I took him and his road manager to my favorite ital vegan spot, Healthful Essence and it was definitely a pleasure reasoning with the brethren whilst getting him to the venue. If you've never heard his album Black Classical Music, you are sorely missing out. Still a favorite of mine when I need to clear my head.
