Flying with Sisters of the Skies Pilot Stephanie Hartsfield

Sisters of the Skies is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of African American women pilots

Sisters of the Skies is a non-profit organization of African-American female commercial pilots. These women are making history almost every day as they pursue careers in what has always been a white male-dominated field. Their fundraising gala is taking place on Saturday, February 26th at 6PM. The organization provides scholarships to increase the number of women who fly the skies. Pilot Stephanie Hartsfield joins us to discuss her career and organization.

I ask Hartsfield, a graduate of Mays High School, how she came to become a pilot. She speaks about winning a flying lesson in ninth grade and becoming hooked. She shares that even today 95% of commercial pilots are White men. Fewer than 4% of commercial pilots are African-American women.

Sisters of the Skies holds several events each year including dream flights to introduce students to what it’s like to sit in the cockpit. They have an annual fundraiser is taking place on Saturday, February 26th. At this event, you will be able to mingle with the women pilots from every sector including those from all of the major airlines. The organization provides scholarships for flying lessons and college scholarships. They have created a pipeline for African American girls who are interested in becoming pilots.
