This week on The Local Take, Chef Kevin Ashford joins us to talk about a favorite Father’s Day Event - The Family Food Fest. This annual event is produced by Atlanta Culinary Charities and will take place on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19th, at the Georgia Freight Depot from 3PM - 6PM, this is a family fun event for everyone. The Family Food Fest includes food tastings, chef demonstrations, entertainment, health screening, a kids zone, and even dental screenings.
This event focuses on food and I ask Chef Ashford how he came to be the lead chef and what it is like for him to coordinate with home and professional chefs throughout our community. He shares that chefs love to participate and it is an honor to win the first-place prize. Participants vote for the best chef and that means quite a bit.
Chef Ashford shares that the Family Food Fest is much more than food, they are able to address some health disparities with free screenings and education. He speaks about the festival opening with a drumline and the honorary host for this year is Frank Ski.
I ask Ashford to speak about the charity arm of this organization. He shares that they work with ask risk youth. They are able to introduce culinary careers to young people as a way to advance personally and professionally.
Chef Ashford shares that home cooks who are interested in participating can still sign-up on their website Family Food Fest.
