In 2019 I participated in the Year of Return to Ghana with one of the largest contingents hosted by the NAACP. The Adinkra Group, led by Diallo Sumbry, curated a great experience that allowed us to travel to various parts of the country. The entire time I was there, I kept thinking I wished my parents were with me. I knew that aspects of our experience may have been a little much for them as they are both in their eighties. But the idea of them visiting Ghana only grew stronger. I reached out to Diallo Sumbry, shared my concerns, and asked if he could curate a trip that would allow them to have the experience without the challenges of limited mobility. And he did. TheBirthright Trip for Elders will take place from February 26th - March 11th, 2023.

This 14-day/13-night experience covering four Ghana regions, including Accra, Cape Coast, Kokobrite, and Kumasi.

I ask Sumbry to share with us how Ghana faired during the Pandemic. He speaks about his family’s experience and the global surprise with the low transmission rates on the continent as a whole.

Sumbry, who curates a trip for our elders, says increasing the tour guide ratio and building in rich low activity days as part of his process. He explains that sometimes that might mean bringing Ghana to the participants.

The trip includes time during Black History Month, celebrated widely in Ghana, and the Ghanaian Independence Day on March 6th. He also shares that this trip will end with three days at a beach resort allowing time for reflection before returning home.
