The Joanne W. Charles Memorial Foundation supports Ovarian Cancer Awareness, especially in rural communities. Ms. Charles was a beloved community member, educator, and leader at her church when she lost her life to Ovarian cancer. Her family responded by raising funds through an annual walk. They have continued their work to increase awareness about this health challenge. According to the CDC, Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer and causes more deaths than any other cancer of the reproduction system. Tamiko Fletcher joins us to speak about the foundation named for her mother.

I asked Fletcher how and why her family came to start this foundation in her mother’s name. She shares that they wanted to honor their mother’s life and knew that other women in rural communities faced similar challenges. Many residents of small towns don’t have public transportation and often need to travel hours to see an oncologist. Fletcher explains that her mother’s doctor was over an hour away from her home.

There isn’t a test for ovarian cancer. She shares that her mother was diagnosed via a CA125 blood test and a transvaginal ultrasound. The symptoms that women should monitor are changes in their bellies, bloating, and frequent urination. Fletcher urges women not to ignore uncomfortable or awkward feelings.

The JWC Memorial Foundation hosts an annual walk and golf tournament, all to increase awareness and research solutions around ovarian cancer.
