The Georgia Legislative session for 2024 started on January 8th. Some bills left over from 2023 will have a second look, including Sports betting and controversial school choice programs. There will also be a look at what to do with the tax surplus, and some focus may be placed on the upcoming trial of our former president, which is still being scheduled. I asked Pamela Perkins-Carn from the Ending Mass Incarceration Georgia Network to join us for an overview.

Perkins-Carn is the co-convener of the EMI-Georgia Network, and she explains that the network is an intentional association of faith communities, organizations, and individuals formed to effect positive change in the areas of youth and criminal justice. The EMI-Georgia Network meets virtually on the fourth Monday of every month at 1PM.

When asked about some of the bills passed last year, she speaks about SB222, which funds access to mental health services. She also speaks about laws passed that impact access to voting.

I asked about laws that the EMI-Georgia Network is supporting. She speaks about the “Raise The Age Bill” initiative. Our state leads the nation in the number of juveniles sentenced to life in prison.

Perkins-Carn encourages us to engage with elected officials in every way possible; email, phone calls, and in-person visits are necessary to ensure your voice is heard.
