The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been known as The Tabernacle Choir since 2018. The members are all volunteers in this large choir aligned with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In October 2023 The Choir hosted Morehouse College and Spelman College choirs in Utah. On September 9th The Choir will perform with the colleges here in Atlanta.
The Choir first performed in 1847 after the church moved to the Salt Lake Valley and the pioneers arrived. Made up of over 300 choir and orchestra members this world-renowned choir is expanding the reach of its world tour. Kelly Taylor the Director of Marketing for The Choir joins us.
The choir was started approximately one month after the pioneers began arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. Kelly speaks about the small concert on August 22, 1847. He also shares that music is a force that unites and calms. Those early settlers had been persecuted for their religious beliefs and the music was a powerful force to help unify the people and also a way to celebrate.
The choir and orchestra are made up of volunteers, Kelly speaks about the requirements to be a member one being you must live within 100 miles of Salt Lake City Utah. They practice every Thursday and perform every Sunday.
He shares how the Morehouse and Spelman choirs were invited to perform in October 2023. The performance at the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College is sold out and will be broadcast on their YouTube Channel. There may be a few tickets left for the State Farm performance.
