In September 2024, BRP Companies and The Prusik Group revealed plans to redevelop Mall West End into One West End Atlanta, with the mall officially closed. During construction, the legacy tenants will be moved to a location on the site at 850 Oak Street where they can continue to serve the community while the new space is being developed.
The development team is also launching a month-long campaign to capture and preserve the community’s memories of Mall West End. Through a digital time capsule, residents and visitors can share photos, videos, and stories that highlight the mall’s role in their lives. These submissions will be incorporated into One West End’s design, ensuring the new development reflects the history of the neighborhood. Community members can share their memories by using the hashtag #OWElegacy in their posts or by emailing attachments to info@onewestendatl.com
We are joined today by Andrew Katz with The Prusik Group and Alicia Porter with The Burning Sands by Alicia.
I asked Katz why it was important for Prusik and their partners to work so closely with the current tenants. He speaks to their company’s ethos “to build for the community”. He shared that they looked inward. They continually asked what does the community need. What does the community want?
Porter shared that the last few months have been a roller coaster of emotions. She goes on to explain that working with the new owners has been great. The current tenants will be allowed to continue serving the community while the new construction takes place.
When asked about the plans for One West End Atlanta, Katz speaks to the transformation of the “mall” concept. He talks about the “dead” space around most malls the large parking lots that exist where people now want walkability and engagement. He also speaks to the need for affordable and student housing for the community and both challenges will be addressed in the new development. Katz continued to reference the legacy and future of the space as a neighborhood icon.
Follow the progress of the new development.
