Off The Street and On Their Feet - Nicholas House Sleep Out Fights Family Homelessness

This week on The Local Take I speak with Roshawn, a single mother who found herself homeless and luckily received support from The Nicholas House.  I also speak with Dennis Bowman, the executive director of The Nicholas House.

Roshawn explains that she became homeless after a family member who provided her with a place to live was evicted. Her family then moved into an extended stay facility. This option proves to be exceptionally expensive, with monthly rates sometimes more than rent or a mortgage.

As she was approaching the end of her financial ability, she received a call from Nicholas House.

I speak with Dennis Bowman, the executive director, about Nicholas House being the only shelter in Metro-Atlanta that allows families to be housed together as a unit as opposed to being separated in most traditional shelters.

Dennis goes on to explain that at Nicholas House they not only provide shelter but education and resources from job readiness and placement to subsidized housing for a few years after completing their program. This organization is always looking for landlords and developers with affordable housing options for their graduates.

On October 5th, the Nicholas House is inviting community members to support their campaign "On Your Feet and Off the Streets." In 2017 I experienced this activity to raise funds and slept out in the Nicholas House back yard. If you are interested in joining me this year, you can register to sleep out, raise funds, or just learn more about Nicholas House and their residents and work.
