Saturday morning at 8am on The Local Take On WCLK we featured a discussion about the documentary Hope and Fury, MLK, The Movement and the Media. The NBC News and MSNBC documentary is available for viewing On Demand; the film is also being screened at venues across the country, including most recently at Clark Atlanta University
We were joined by Ebonne Ruffins, VP with Comcast/NBC Universal. From Selma to Ferguson, Hope and Fury explores the relationship between protest movements and the media.
We also discuss the current environment in our country with calls of "fake news" challenging reputable news organizations along with social media outlets.
Phil Bertelsen, director of the documentary joins our conversation. I ask him why he thought a documentary was the best way to tell this story. I speak with him about how the movement used the media to amplify the challenges that many faced daily. He speaks about his partner Rachel Dretzin and their desire to provide a historical perspective that is still valid today. Phil share that his next project is a series on the life of Malcom X.

- January 15, 2019 at Minnesota History Center (St. Paul, MN). This screening is open to Museum visitors;
- January 21, 2019 at Philander Smith College (Little Rock, AR) as part of The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr Commission's Annual King Holiday day events.
