Dave Stryker pops up in a lot of Modern Jazz music I like. He toured for a decade with Stanley Turrentine, and he's worked with a number of Jazz notables including Kevin Mahogany, Eliane Elias, and Steve Slagle. His new album Baker's Circle (Strikezone) features Stryker leading a tight quartet that includes Jared Gold on Hammond B3, McClenty Hunter on drums, and Walter Smith III driving things with a propulsive tenor saxophone. There's not a bad cut on Baker's Circle, which allows each member of the quartet to shine. Cuban Percussionist Mayra Casales joins in on three songs. If you like melodic, upbeat post-bop with guitar and organ, check out Dave Stryker, son of the Omaha, Nebraska scene. I'll feature a very mid-period Coltrane like piece called Rush Hour from Dave Stryker's Baker's Circle in the eight o'clock hour tonight on Mainstream and Modern, 8p-11p Sundays on Jazz 91.9 WCLK.
