The Local Take: Eviction Moratorium with DeKalb Commissioner Lorraine Cochran Johnson

This week on WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am), I speak with DeKalb County Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, representing Super District 7. We discuss the Eviction Moratorium extended in DeKalb County before the CDC announced an extension nationwide. Specifically in states where the COVID-19 delta variant is spreading.

I ask her how the county is currently doing with the spike in COVID-19, and she provides us with some numbers.  She shares that there have been over 60,000 confirmed cases and 5,000 hospitalizations.

I ask Johnson if she can provide us with information on how the program worked when it began.  She speaks about those in need submitting an online form.  She shares that there are currently 400 evictions scheduled, and 22% of renters are still behind on their rent. In our state, 340,000 citizens are in vulnerable to eviction.

I speak about the challenge of many municipalities receiving funds but not distributing those funds. Johnson tells me that the system to collect information for the program got hacked, and DeKalb had to start all over.  She encourages listeners who previously applied to re-apply. She emphasizes that you’ll receive a response within 72 hours.

Johnson also shared that the county is working with residents who may not get caught up. They have funds to help you.
