The Local Take Talks Seniors and Food Insecurity with Jacque Thornton of National Church Residences

This week on WCLK's The Local Take(Saturdays 8am) I speak with Jacqueline Thornton, Director of Population Health at National Church Residences.  This organization provides affordable senior housing at 9 locations in metro Atlanta.  They work throughout the country and have been in existence for over 50 years.

Ms. Thornton shares information about her responsibilities and that she knew the Covid-19 Pandemic would have an adverse effect on their residents being able to secure food.  To avoid this, she reach out to the commercial kitchen at Big Bethel which was being used for storage.  After securing the use of the kitchen, they began securing funding. The Food Hub as this project is known is now providing food for 1,400 National Church Residences’ senior residents who want it in Fulton and DeKalb counties.

She lets us know that community members can start a letter writing campaign targeting seniors who reside in their facilities.  Many are often living alone.

Thornton believes that they were able to get up and running so quickly due to spiritual forces.  Everything begin to fall into place, she explained.

To Donate to the Resident Emergency Fund By donating to the Resident Emergency Fund, you will be helping support our residents who have been the most affected by local/regional COVID-19 response protocols. Assistance with prepared meals, emergency grocery provisions and medical supplies will be provided with these funds. Resident food pantries and transportation will also be supported with your donation. Link: https://www.nationalchurchresidences.org/donate/COVID-19-response.
