The Local Take: Leatrice Ellzy Wright Leaves Hammonds House Museum for Harlem's Apollo Theater

Saturday morning at eight on WCLK's The Local Take, I talk with The Hammonds House Museum's most recent Executive Director, Leatrice Ellzy Wright, as she prepares to join the famed Apollo Theatre. Wright has been on the Atlanta cultural scene since she began working with the National Black Arts Festival as a curator and producer. Her knowledge and innovation changed the historic Hammonds House Museum in West End after just a few months.

I asked if she was leaving Hammonds House in good hands, and she assured us that she would be working with their new leader as she transitions from the position. She mentions that "everybody wants to play" the Apollo Theatre. The eighty-eight-year-old institution has begun to stretch out in Harlem beyond the stage in two new venues. Wright will start to lead the organization with innovative educational programming. She speaks about how culture can impact our community and nation.

For several years now, Wright has led small groups to cultural centers around the world. I asked if she would keep up that part of her work. She mentioned curating a tour for Atlantans to visit New York and Harlem.
